Bark Beetle Devastation

As I’m sitting here writing this article and looking out over all the dead bark beetle trees, I realize our landscape will be changed for at least the rest of my life.  The good news is there is a lot of seedlings coming up and with the rain they are growing rapidly.  The county is in the process of hiring a person to manage the dead trees along the roads and near our homes.   I am in the process of working with CAL Fire in bringing in an Air-Curtain burner so people will have a place to bring their logs to get them burned.  It will be a great program with no cost.  Just a reminder when people come around to fall trees next to your homes make sure they have insurance, are qualified and the price they are charging is a fair price.  I don’t like to hear about fallers taking advantage of the elderly or the situation, charging outrages prices, so shop around.
We will be starting our weed spraying program along the roads again.  This program helps protect our roads, protects against fire and helps site visibility.  If you don’t want the weeds sprayed on the road right-a-way, there is an opt-out application which you can get on my website or the county’s website, but then it is your responsibility to keep the weeds down according to the county specification.  We are trying to make our roads last longer and be safer for everyone.

On Dec. 13th, we had our first discussion and direction meeting at the B.O.S. about the future of our fire department.  We need our volunteers and along with the help of CAL Fire.  The biggest problem to solve is how we can blend the two together to make Mariposa County a safe place to live with great fire protection.  There is a cost factor and there needs to be a growing trust between the two departments.  We have to look ahead because we can’t go back to the way the fire department used to be a couple years ago.   So I hope in the next couple of months we can get this settled so both sectors are happy and working together.  Our sheriff who was the interim has done a fabulous job but managing both departments is too much for one person.
This spring we will be doing a 1.5 million dollar drainage project in Coulterville.  Coulterville sits in a bowl and in many areas there are drainage problems.  Our county engineer is working out the details.  I will be having a town hall meeting around March or April to let everyone voice their opinion, but I like the preliminary plans.  I’ll keep you updated on the project.
I wasn’t able to do an article last month because I needed to have eye surgery.  All went well and I will have my other eye done by the time the January paper comes out.  I always remember I work for you, the people of Mariposa County and District 2.  You can reach me in Mariposa at 966-3222 or my office in Greeley Hill at 878-3158.  For current updates on the County and District 2, please check out my website at www.mariposacountydist2.com.  It is updated as soon as news and information come in.  I’m totally amazed out how many hits the site receives each day.  If you have any pictures, event dates or event information you would like to share, please email it to mjonesdist2mariposacty@gmail.com.
